The roots of Uzbek boxing go back to American boxer Sidney Jackson, who arrived in Tashkent in 1914 and helped establish boxing in the region.

Under the Soviet boxing system, the sport developed around technical repetition, movement, defence, timing and tactical preparation. Over time, Uzbekistan shaped this heritage into its own distinctive boxing school, known for precision, discipline and high-level competition.

After the collapse of the USSR and Uzbekistan’s independence in 1991, the country continued to develop this tradition through its national teams, specialist coaches and training centres, becoming one of the strongest nations in world amateur boxing.

The same system has also produced professional world champions across multiple weight divisions, including Ruslan Chagaev, two-time WBA heavyweight world champion, Murodjon “MJ” Akhmadaliev, unified super-bantamweight world champion, and Israil Madrimov, WBA super-welterweight world champion.

This transition from elite amateur boxing to professional world titles shows the strength of the Uzbek and Soviet boxing tradition at every level of the sport.
